Sometimes the journey from surgery to normalcy takes some time. Even for something as simple as varicose vein surgery, it may take a few years for everything to come back to normal in terms of swelling, ankle and foot mobility and even how you walk on an everyday basis. Here's an example of how to go from swelling and limited ROM, muscle weakness and foot pain in between the toes that can affect your squat or how you walk to a much improved ROM for toe extension in general a...nd passively when in full terminal stance. The first picture shows the swelling from about 1 year ago and with therapy starting in July we've seen great improvements in squat form, walking and toe mobility with simple stretches and exercises. Video feedback is great because it really allows the person to see what things really look like and then teaching about how and why the new adjustments will help in the long run reinforces learning and follow through. Stretching into end range toe extension and doing basic range of motion exercises daily is a great way to re-establish motor control and a connection to a part of the body that is largely ignored and forgotten once stuffed into shoes. This was filmed right after the quarantine was temporarily lifted. We definitely noticed many of our patients and clients where having a challenge driving their hips correctly due to a lot of sitting and restricted movements during the quarantine.
