The City of Vacaville today signaled the start of the next generation of development of its world class biomanufacturing cluster by announcing plans to expand it on approximately 300 acres adjacent to existing facilities and to name the entire zone the California Biomanufacturing Center. At the same time, the city announced the creation of the California Biomanufacturing Center, Inc., a nonprofit that will accelerate the growth of the sector in Vacaville by working with indus...try and academic partners to ensure Vacaville remains a place for biomanufacturing to flourish and to ensure that the industry and community thrive together. Vacaville Mayor Ron Rowlett pointed to the establishment of the California Biomanufacturing Center as a reflection of the city’s deep and ongoing commitment to the sector and said it will help to guide the continuing growth of the industry in Vacaville. The city expects that this expansion will lead to more than $2 billion in industrial development, 3.5 million square feet of commercial real estate, and the addition of 10,000 jobs with a payroll of more than $1 billion a year. Congressman John Garamendi joined the Mayor, Solano Community College President Dr. Celia Esposito-Noy, and California Biomanufacturing Center President Matthew Gardner, along with other dignitaries at an event at the Solano Community College Biotechnology and Science Building to unveil the new center and discuss how it fits into Vacaville’s plans to expand its biomanufacturing footprint with advanced production facilities. City officials announced today the hiring of Girum Awoke, Ph.D. to lead the City’s Public Works Department, replacing Shawn Cunningham who retired in July. Awoke takes the helm of the City’s second largest department on November 4. Awoke comes to the City of Vacaville with over 16 years of experience. He started his career as a project manager in the private sector in May 2004 and transitioned to local government as a transportation engineer for the Maryland State Highway Adm...inistration in June 2006. He then transitioned to Montgomery County Department of Transportation, where he served as a project manager and later the Chief of Construction. Awoke holds a doctorate in civil engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park and is a licensed professional engineer in the State of California. He leaves his position as the Public Works Director for the City of Gilroy, where he has worked since 2017. We’re very excited to have Girum at the City of Vacaville, said Aaron Busch, City Manager. He brings a wealth of experience and we’re confident he has the leadership skills we need to keep the public works department moving in a positive direction. Awoke was selected from a large pool of well-qualified candidates. I am honored to be selected as the next Public Works Director for the City of Vacaville and am grateful for the opportunity to serve the City with utmost dedication, said Awoke. I look forward to working very closely with City Manager Busch, my colleagues in other departments, and staff to fulfill the goals and objectives that the city council has set forth for the City of Vacaville. The City of Vacaville’s Public Works Department is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the infrastructure of the City, including parks, streets, water, sewer and storm drainage systems, city buildings and facilities, transit, traffic signals, solid waste, recycling, street signs, and striping. Awoke will oversee the work of 113 full-time employees and 29 part-time staff, an operating budget of $25 million, and capital improvements budget of $36 million.

There was a reported Mountain Lion sighting at Pena Adobe today. Mountain Lions are not uncommon in California, and attacks on humans are rare. If you spot a mountain lion, stay as far back as you can, take the encounter seriously, and follow precautions to protect yourself with the compiled tips from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Mountain Lion Foundation on what to do if a Mountain Lion threatens you. BE ALERT - Pay attention to your surroundings. PI...CK UP CHILDREN - This makes you look bigger and keeps them safer. SLOWLY CREATE DISTANCE- Back away while keeping your eyes on the Mountain Lion. MAKE LOUD NOISES - speak calmly and do not use high pitched tones or high pitch screams. DO NOT RUN - Anyone who runs may initiate an attack. ACT DEFIANT, NOT AFRAID - Maintain eye contact. Aggressively wave your arms, throw stones or branches, do not turn away. PROTECT YOURSELF - Anything near you can be a weapon, even your bare hands. Try to stay on your feet. If knocked down, try to protect your head and neck.
