The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) @ameracadpeds recently updated recommendations to keep young children in rear-facing car seats as long as possible, until they "reach the highest weight or height allowed by the seat manufacturer." Previously, the AAP recommended that kids should remain rear-facing until age two. The newest recommendation removes this age-specific milestone. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction that can cause a myriad of symptoms: rash, face/lip swelling, vomiting, wheezing or trouble breathing due to airway closure. Although 86% of families who have a child with severe allergies claim to have epinephrine on-hand, only 36% actually know how to properly use it. Become familiar with an epinephrine auto-injector, BEFORE you need it. Review the manufacturer's instructions included in the package insert. Practice with a...n empty cartridge, and repeat until you are comfortable. Helpful Tips: Insert into the mid-outer thigh. You can push the auto-injector through clothing, if needed. When in doubt, err on the side of giving epinephrine, rather than waiting too long. For any anaphylactic symptoms, give epinephrine and call 911.
