Three members of the Section on Vertebrate Organogenesis at #NIH @nichd_nih aquatic research specialist Daniel Castranova, postbaccalaureate fellow Bakary Samasa, and lab chief Brant Weinstein recently won the top prize in the 46th annual Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition for this photo showing the bones, scales, and lymphatic... vessels of a juvenile #zebrafish. The image is not only gorgeous to look at, but it also contributed to the lab's discovery that the zebrafish skull contains lymphatic vessels, which were previously thought to occur only in mammals. This breakthrough will allow scientists to use zebrafish to study the development of these vessels, which help remove waste products from the brain and thus could play a role in human neurological diseases like #Alzheimers.
