The 3 Musketeers. These orphaned mountain lions have been through so much, but have bonded wonderfully under the watchful eyes of our Vet Hospital and Animal Care staff. We are so happy to see their improvement, and are excited that they will stay with each other when they transition to their future permanent home. We will let you all know more as soon as we finalize plans! ... Follow Captain Cal and the females on their blog: https://www.oaklandzoo.org/blog/captain-cal
Join us for an unique edition of Cocktails & Conservation with a special address from Oakland Zoo President & CEO, Dr. Joel Parrott. He will recognize our Friends of the Wild and other major donors and provide a few updates on the Zoo. Dr. Parrott will also speak to the incredible veterinary work being done at ARCAS, and the potential for Oakland Zoo to support even more of this type of field work in the future. Our guest is Dr. Alejandro Morales of ARCAS Wildlife Rescue in G...uatemala. Alejandro has dedicated his life to being a vet for central American wildlife! His work with ARCAS ensures that beautiful animals caught in the illegal wildlife trade are skillfully rehabilitated then released once again into the Mayan Biosphere. As always, our episode will feature a custom cocktail. This episode will feature a special beer cocktail "Zoo Town Michelada" from Oakland's own, Ale Industries, so we can toast to a safe world for wildlife. Look out for the recipe, mix your cocktail, and join us live! See more
No trash can is too tough to close for Rizada, our female currasow, who enjoyed assisting in the weeding of her habitat Thanks to our volunteer Kathy for the video!
Taking Action For Wildlife is as simple as having a beer - a Town Zoo to be exact! Enjoy our new beer in collaboration with Ale Industries! Each sip you take of Town Zoo helps Oakland Zoo's efforts to support our partners at ARCAS in Guatemala. ... By the time you're done drinking, you can feel good that you've helped in the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of macaws, jaguars, and sea turtles back into the wild. Learn more about the amazing work of ARCAS and enjoy a Town Zoo Michelada during Cocktails & Conservation November 11 LIVE from Facebook & YouTube. https://www.oaklandzoo.org/programs-/cocktails-conservation #oaklandzoo #aleindustries #arcas #takingaction #drinkingforwildlife
To better protect elephants in the wild, it helps to understand how they think. Donna, our dominant female African elephant, is helping measure elephant intelligence and long-term memory in research conducted by Monica Sandri and Patrick Freeman of Utopia Scientific along with lead elephant keeper Gina Kinzley. In this video, the research team studies Donna’s ability to learn, recognize, and remember an image (picture of a banana). The team evaluates Donna’s ability to visua...lize and recognize the pictured fruit as a representation of the real thing. This important research gives us an idea of how elephants in the wild may recognize and remember elements critical to survival, like locations of water and food sources.
Ok who left their lacy gloves at the ball last night? Our leopard gecko Meghan recently shed this skin from her arms and hands. Leopard geckos periodically shed the skin from their entire body all at once, similar to a snake, but not all in one piece. It's rare to find these adorably delicate little pieces intact!
Orphaned mountain lions aren't the only animals getting care from our vet staff -- all of our Oakland Zoo residents need attention too, like Ganesha the Siamang, who came to the hospital for a general exam last week. This 23 year old primate got x-rays, a full exam, and dental work from Dr. Herman and her team. All looks good and Ganesha is back at his habitat with his brother Hahnumahn. Thanks, vet staff! #VetTales Friday
