These are last 5 interesting facts from 1970. Enjoy! 46) As the Stooges’ Fun House inspired the more primal future punkers, the Velvet Underground’s Loaded, released Nov. 15, inspired the artsier ones thanks to this album and songs such as Sweet Jane and Rock & Roll. 47) Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs gave Eric Clapton the excellent foil of guest guitarist Duane Allman for most of Derek and the Dominos debut double-album, and songs such as Nobody Knows You Whe...n You’re Down and Out and Key To The Highway soar when they get going. And then there’s Layla herself, which with Clapton, Allman, and that beautiful piano outro remains a stunner. 48) Gimme Shelter, the Maysles brothers documentary about the Rolling Stones 1969 tour is the bookend to the Woodstock doc released earlier in the year. Where Woodstock captures the peace and love that had already started in the ’70s, Gimme Shelter, which included footage of the infamous Altamont festival in which a fan was fatally stabbed, feels more fitting for what was to come. 49) The tragic romance of Oliver and Jenny in Love Story arrived on Dec. 16, and over that month and beyond became so popular it remains the box office champion of films released in 1970 with $136 million in unadjusted-for-inflation stacks of cash. Ryan O’Neal and Ali McGraw were the two lovers. Tommy Lee Jones made his film debut in a small role. 50) Loretta Lynn hadn’t been in that cabin, on a hill in Butcher Holler, for quite a spell when she Coal Miner’s Daughter hit No. 1 on the country charts a few months after its Oct. 5 release. But she remembered it all and put it in this song which rightly became her signature tune. And this is the end of 50 facts that took place in 1970. I hope you enjoyed the memories.

#41-45 interesting facts from 1970... 41) The Public Broadcasting System debuts on Oct. 5, taking over from the National Educational Television network that had existed in one form another since 1954. Initial programs included transfers from NET such as Sesame Street and Washington Week, as well as reruns of British shows such as Doctor Who. 42) Russian writer Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, who was exiled to a labor camp for eight years by Stalin, and still severely restricte...d by Soviet leaders after his release, is awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature on Oct. 8. His works include One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich and The Gulag Archipelago, an account of the Soviet prison camps that was written before he won the Nobel but not published until several years later. 43) Cartoonist Garry Trudeau debuts Doonesbury on Oct. 26, leaping off from the Bull Tales comic he’d done at Yale and reinventing some of those characters such as Mike and B.D. as students at the fictional Walden College. It quickly becomes a hit and five years later wins Trudeau a Pulitzer Prize. 44) Author Toni Morrison publishes her first novel, The Bluest Eye, on Oct. 29. Its story of a young black girl who feels inferior due to the overt and internal racism in her life touches on themes not just of racism but also the white lifestyles dominant in the culture, religion, and shame. Not an overnight success, The Bluest Eye slowly grew into a classic of literature, and Morrison a future Pulitzer and Nobel laureate. 45) The Grateful Dead released two classic albums in 1970, Workingman’s Dead in the summer, and American Beauty on Nov. 1. The latter gets the spotlight for songs such as Truckin’, Sugar Magnolia, and Friend of the Devil, though Uncle John’s Band and Casey Jones on the former are none too shabby.

Some more interesting facts from 1970..... 36) Monday Night Football premieres on ABC on Sept. 21 with Howard Cosell, Keith Jackson and former Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback Dandy Don Meredith in the booth. It’s an instant hit reportedly Monday night moviegoing dips and bowling leagues shift their schedules to Tuesday. Impress your friends with the first final score: Cleveland Browns over the New York Jets 31-21. 37) Two more new sitcoms premiere when The Odd Couple and T...he Partridge Family arrive on Sept. 24-25. Jack Klugman and Tony Randall are terrific as Oscar and Felix, the mismatched roommates. And Shirley Jones, David Cassidy, Danny Bonaduce and company are instantly popular as the musical family, though I might have sang I Think I Love You with Susan Dey in mind. 38) Get on up! James Brown’s double-album Sex Machine drops on Sept. 30 and if it can’t make you move then or now you might be dead. Stay on the scene, like a lovin’ machine! 39) Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret, is published on Oct. 1 and quickly becomes a classic of modern YA literature with its franker-than-normal look at the life of a tween or teen girl. 40) The big, beautiful voice of Janis Joplin, 27, is silenced Oct. 4 when she dies of an accidental heroin overdose at her Hollywood motel, her psychedelic-painted Porsche parked outside her room when she is found.
