On October 28, 2001, Officer Fontana was assigned to work patrol as 71A4 in the Southern Division. It was an extremely busy night. The officers working District Adam were responding to calls in quick succession. Shortly after 2:00 AM, Officer Fontana and his teammates were dispatched to the call of a disturbance involving weapons on Rotterdam Lane. When the first officers arrived on scene, they discovered a party that had grown out of control into a large fight. Several par...ty-goers had already fled the scene prior to police arrival. At 2:04 AM, Officer Fontana arrived on scene. Shortly thereafter, the fight was brought under control. No arrests were made, and the responding officers cleared the call. At 4:16 AM, Officer Fontana cleared another call. He and one of his teammates decided to go report write together. As they traveled Eastbound on Blossom Hill Road, the other officer noticed that Officer Fontana was no longer behind him. It is assumed Officer Fontana saw something suspicious while driving behind his teammate, and changed course to investigate. Officer Fontana followed a vehicle into the Almaden Valley into a residential neighborhood. The vehicle made three consecutive right turns when it pulled onto Calle Almaden, a dead-end street. Officer Fontana used his patrol vehicle to block its escape path. As Officer Fontana approached the vehicle, the suspect, DeShawn Campbell, fired one shot from a handgun, fatally striking Officer Fontana. Campbell then fled the scene on foot. At 4:34 AM, a 9-1-1 call was received from a resident on Calle Almaden reporting that an officer was down. Officer Fontana was the first unit assigned by communications to respond to the call. After he did not respond to the radio, arriving units found him lying next to his patrol vehicle. Officer Fontana was pronounced dead at 4:48 AM. Officer Fontana was the eleventh San Jose Police Officer killed in the line of duty.

On Monday, October 25, 1999, Officer Casey responded on his day off to work with mechanics to check and make repairs to Air 1. Ground checks were done and everything appeared normal. Officer Casey and the mechanic took off and did a number of system checks while hovering off the ground at Reid Hillview Airport. All systems appeared to be functioning normally. It was decided to bring Air 1 back to San Jose Airport for further tests and maintenance. En route to San Jose Airport..., Officer Casey was on final approach when Air 1 went unexpectedly out of control. Officer Casey’s final actions were clear. He struggled heroically with the controls and guided the helicopter to a location where no one on the ground would be injured. As a result, he was unable to slow the decent of Air 1, and it was badly crushed when it hit the ground. Officer Casey and the mechanic where killed on impact. The newspaper wrote, The helicopter slammed into the middle of the street at about 3:30 PM, just north of Interstate 880, barely skirting cars, buildings, trees and power lines. Mayor Ron Gonzales and Police Chief William Lansdowne called the veteran pilot a hero for steering the copter to the only empty spot in the congested area. Chief Lansdowne later received a letter from a local mother whose daughter was driving near the exact location where the accident happened. She thanked Officer Casey’s family for their son’s bravery and self-sacrifice in sparing injury to her daughter and everyone else nearby. Officer Casey was the tenth San Jose Police Officer killed in the line of duty.

No surprise to see Officers Duran and Ruybal going above and beyond, helping our kids. Both officers have spent their entire careers, giving back just like this.
