Hey 1890 Bryant Street Studios. Get your artists ready! We are doing this!
Shortly after the shutdown, Cynthia and a group of fellow artists held a conference via Zoom. Now as the pandemic reaches its year-mark, Cynthia will be part of... a virtual conversation entitled The Arts as a Vehicle for Transformation: Moving from Trauma to Healing, which takes place online tomorrow, Wednesday, February 24. I am so excited and honored to have been invited by civic leader, community angel and artist, Barbara Mumby-Huerta to share how we use intuitive art-making to help heal our communities by starting with womxn. (Cynthia prefers to spell the word women as ‘womxn,’ as a way to include and honor all women of all backgrounds and diversities on all levels). Equity is not possible without the foundation of healing communities of color and underserved populations. How do we begin to integrate a trauma informed lens into our work and everyday life? Cynthia asks this question as her work for the past decade has been about healing through workshops and retreat venues like A Place of Her Own. Tomorrow’s session will provide a basic framework for incorporating trauma informed practices into arts programs, as well as introduce a few successful examples of where the arts have been used as a catalyst for healing. The session will be hosted by the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the Guild for short), and Cynthia’s co-presenter will be Barbara Mumby-Huerta of the San Francisco Arts Commission. The session aims to give community arts educators tools to work with their communities and heal together through the arts. It is the final session of the Guild’s ‘Rootwork-Grounding Community Arts Education Beyond the Pandemic,’ virtual series about how to create programming informed by, and supportive of, the many, varied lived experiences of our communities in the unique context of this moment.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em-QLFfA_Xo&feature=youtu.be Artist talk given by the fantastic Cynthia Tom. It is about 30+ years of inspiration as a professional artist. It is not about achievements, but rather the epiphanies along the way that have guided her to create work and curate exhibitions that focus on womxn's healing, social justice for community and spirituality to support our internal well being.
