You know what's better than saying "this food is good for you"? Tell them what foods do in their body! Why do I keep sharing this message? Because we keep selli...ng our kids short labeling foods and good/bad, healthy/unhealthy. Here are some examples of messages I like for different ages: For 2-3yo kids I usually break it down by color. Although it's not 100% accurate, it’s a good framework to get started. Red: gives you a strong heart Orange: helps you see in the dark Yellow: helps your body heal cuts Green: gives you super powers to fight off sickness Blue and Purple: Give you a strong brain White: gives you energy For 4s and 5s you can start being more specific - like carrots and sweet potatoes help you be able to see in the dark. Clementines help your skin heal cuts. Broccoli helps your night vision, your skin heal, AND your bones be strong. For 4s/5s and 6s you can introduce the idea that some foods do a lot of things in their bodies and some foods do a few things. For 6s and 7s you can introduce the concept of vitamins and minerals - tell them HOW carrots protect their night vision (via vitamin A). Learn about the body. For 8s and 9s - learn even more about different things in foods. And so on. All the while, model the way you want your kids to eat in your home and serve them the balanced diet you want them to eat. That's more powerful than anything you could ever tell them. If you need help getting your child to try new foods, my free child eating guide From Stress to Success - 4 Ways to Help Your Child Eat Better without Losing Your Mind is in my bio @kids.eat.in.color #kidseatincolor See more

Over the weekend, Malibu Beach Team Deputies assisted a family in searching for their missing 7 year old daughter on the beach. After about 20 minutes, they loc...ated the missing girl about six lifeguard towers away. When out with young kids, especially at large beaches, everything looks the same, as a parent take a picture of your child, so you know exactly what they are wearing, educate the kids as to lifeguard tower numbers, or any other noticeable landmarks around. Make sure they know your name (not mom or dad) and a telephone number. It is a scary thought for a parent when they realize their kid(s) are nowhere around, but even scarier for a child when they can’t find their family. Luckily in this situation, the family was quickly reunited. See more

In response to the pandemic, Covered California launched an emergency special enrollment period for uninsured Californians. More than 175,000 Californians have already signed up for health insurance. If you have not gotten covered yet, there is still time. Covered California announced that it is extending the deadline through the end of July. Don’t wait! https://www.coveredca.com//getting-cov/special-enrollment/

God gave us the most beautiful playground to play in and for some reason, so many of us are scared of letting our kids experience all of that beauty. We, as adults, view dirt as dirt whereas kids view it as never ending fun -- the way it should be. http://community.today.com/parentingte/post/raise-them-wild

Nature play, or time spent in nature, boasts many benefits. One study of school children in Colorado and Maryland showed that access to natural areas for elementary and high school students is associated with reduced stress, increased focus and competence, and the ability to form supportive social groups. Time spent outdoors also: Gets kids moving (exercise is also associated with decreased stress and anxiety), Promotes creativity Increases confidence as kids learn to pus...h their own boundaries and take healthy risks And gives them time to think. While watching a group of ants might feel exceptionally boring to an adult with a long worry list in mind, time spent observing their natural environments does give kids a much-needed break. https://www.pbs.org//thri/nature-as-stress-relief-for-kids
