IRVINE LAKE REPORT By Steve Carson 1/24/16 IRVINE LAKE TOPPED BY 4-2 TROUT, 15-1 CATFISH... Irvine Lake is currently offering no-limit on trout and catfish in the main lake, with a 3-fish limit in the Lagoon. Both trout and catfish were caught by Team 57 anglers who converged on the lake for a sendoff fishing session. Lake veterans and expert anglers Mits Onizuka and Chris Hagopian topped the catches in the respective species categories with a 4-pound trout and a 15-pound catfish. The low water conditions are allowing bass anglers to hike to less-fished areas, resulting in good numbers of 2-4 pound largemouth. Best bets for bassers are jigs and plastics. Families with children age 12 and under found fair numbers of 1-3 pound catfish in the Kids Lagoon. Southern California anglers face the closure of this, one of their favorite fishing holes, as Irvine Lake plans to lock the gates on February 28, according to General Manager Dave Noyes. The Irvine Company exercised its option not to renew the lease with Serrano Recreation, said Noyes. All land surrounding the lake was donated to Orange County by the Irvine Company, so Orange County Parks and Rec will be taking over day to day management at the end of March. Noyes added, The lake itself is co-owned by the Irvine Company and Serrano Water District, and any future use of the lake for fishing or other recreational use must be agreed upon by both parties. Our tentative last day for fishing will be February 28, although it is possible that operations could continue until March 31, when the 20-year lease formally ends. Boat and RV storage operations will continue as normal. Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included: Mits Onizuka of Irvine, 4-2 rainbow trout on nightcrawlers at the west shore Chris Hagopian of Redondo Beach, 15-1 channel catfish [released] on mackerel at Rocky Point Follow Irvine Lake on Facebook, on the web at IrvineLake.net or call 714-649-9111 See more

IRVINE LAKE REPORT By Steve Carson 1/10/15 IRVINE LAKE CATFISH STILL CHEWING... Despite the calendar saying January, the catfish bite was still on at Irvine Lake, observed Daniela Gavaldon at the Pro Shop. Even on the days when it was pouring rain, the catfish were biting in the main lake and the Kids Lagoon, observed Gavaldon. She added, The rains did not affect our lakeside roads very much, all of them are open and there are no problems driving on them Veteran catfish angler Chris Hagopian along with several members of Team 57 scored several nice whiskerfish at the far end of the west shore road, casting near the buoy line using mackerel. Bass anglers did well on 2-4 pound largemouth using a variety of different plastic presentations. Walking to more isolated spots produced better numbers of bass. A few plump bluegill and redear sunfish were hitting on nightcrawlers. Families with children age 12 and under found very good numbers of 1-3 pound catfish in the Kids Lagoon using nightcrawlers or mackerel. Little Sarah Spoolstra and her father David went out bravely on a blustery day, and hammered easy limits of catfish in the Kids Lagoon using Bite-On Macbites. Anglers are reminded that no watercraft are allowed on Irvine Lake. The main lake currently offers no limit fishing for catfish and trout, but a 3-fish limit applies in the Kids Lagoon. Fishing hours are Wednesdays-Sundays 6 AM-4 PM, Mondays-Tuesdays closed. Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included: Armando Renteria of Orange, 7-0 channel catfish on mackerel at the west shore 9-year old Sarah Spoolstra of Orange, 3-1 channel catfish on Bite-On Macbites at the Kids Lagoon Follow Irvine Lake on Facebook, on the web at IrvineLake.net or call 714-649-9111 See more

IRVINE LAKE REPORT By Steve Carson 1/3/15 IRVINE LAKE MIXED BAG TOPPED BY 14-0 BLUE CAT... Anglers at Irvine Lake continued to see a variety of species coming in, reported Daniela Gavaldon at the Pro Shop. We have seen some of everything this week, observed Gavaldon. Folks showed up on New Year’s Day, and just wanted to catch the first fish of 2016, they were not particular about the species. Lake regular Terry Lairson tipped, The trout are biting best on nightcrawlers fished under a bobber. Eithr a plain old red/white bobber, or a slip bobber rig, with the nightcrawler hanging about 3 or 4 feet under it. Light line, only 2-pound or 4-pound test is very important too. An excellent stringer of catfish totaling over 100 pounds was made by Armando Renteria and his team 57 group at the buoy line. The catfish had no problem whatsoever hitting on bigger chunks of mackerel, noted Renteria. Strong scents, especially garlic really helped too. The fish are starting to bite earlier instead of just in the late afternoon. Be sure to leave the hook exposed in the bait, and let the catfish run with for a while before you set the hook. Don’t just jerk when you begin to feel the bit, the fish is probably just chewing on it. Bass anglers continued to find good numbers of 2-5 pound largemouth, but details about rumored larger bucketmouths to 8 pounds were difficult to ascertain. James Getty of Owner Hooks was concentrating on bass, tossing watermelon-color plastic craws on Owner Jig Rigs, and did well with a deep and ultra-slow presentation along points. Several anglers with large swimbaits tied on declined to give any information about their luck. Families with children age 12 and under found good numbers of 1-3 pound catfish in the Kids Lagoon on mackerel or nightcrawlers, along with the largest fish of the week, a whopping 14-pound whiskerfish. There is currently no limit on trout or catfish. Anglers are reminded that watercraft of any kind are not permitted at Irvine Lake. Lake hours are Wednesdays through Sundays, 6 AM-4 PM, and the lake is closed on Mondays & Tuesdays. Outstanding catches of the week at Irvine Lake included: Armando Renteria of Anaheim, 3-0 rainbow trout on nightcrawlers at the west shore 11-year old Anthony Graeber of Pacific Palisades, 14-0 blue catfish [released] on mackerel in the Kids Lagoon Chris Hagopian of Redondo Beach, 12-8 channel catfish on mackerel at the west shore 10-year old Drew Miller of Orange, 3-5 channel catfish on nightcrawlers in the Catchout Pond James Getty of Orange, 5-1 largemouth bass [released] on an Owner Jig rig at the west shore Chris Hagopian of Redondo Beach, 1-7 bluegill on nightcrawlers at the west shore Follow Irvine Lake on Facebook, on the web at IrvineLake.net or call 714-649-9111 See more
