As suicide awareness month comes to a close we want to shed light on how our beloved ostomy community is affected by mental health struggles. A research paper was published this past spring that noted that a high percentage of ostomy patients report feelings of hopelessness, disappointment, and even suicidal ideation (Sarabi, 2020). We all know intimately well that going through ostomy surgery is no small feat. A period of grief and upset is normal and healthy for patients ...to experience as long as they have the tools to process those emotions and eventually transform them into something more positive. Sometimes it can be as simple as connecting with another ostomy patient to get support, like our Patient Coaches. If you find that you are in crisis or are experiencing difficult or suicidal thoughts, we urge you to call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
