100 Island Challenge

The same coral reef will look different ever time, that’s why recording change over time using large area imaging is an invaluable tool. Here you can see the growth (in blue/green) and loss (in red) between years. Metrics like like these help both scientists and reef communities.

Words of hope for the ocean, #repost from #100islandchallenge collaborators @waittinstitute Dr. Stuart Sandin is a professor at @scripps_ocean and director of the Institution’s Center for Marine Biodiversity and Conservation. He also leads the @100islandchallenge, which uses 3D technology to better understand how coral reefs change and adapt over time. He and his team work closely with the Waitt Institute to connect scientific insights with the conservation efforts of the... Blue Prosperity Coalition. What gives him hope for the future of the ocean? In his words, much of the news is of doom and gloom. However, in visiting islands across the tropics, we see evidence of biological hope in every location, where biology and humans are arriving as solutions to keep reefs around for the years to come. On a recent research visit to Pohnpei, in the Federated States of Micronesia, he spent a few days working on the reefs of Pakin and was astounded by the vibrancy of the coral community. #BlueProsperitySpotlight
